Your Life Has Another Author | Carl Jung & Ram Dass
The one who is exhausted from running your life was never the one running it.
The teaching
The one who made the list this morning is not the author of your life. A larger intelligence has been living it. The exhaustion is not proof that you are failing at the job. It is proof that you were never hired for it.
Carl Jung watched an ordinary Tuesday and named what most people never name. The ego is the center of what you can see, not the center of the psyche. Beneath it is the Self: the whole that dreams you, the organizing intelligence with a will the planner did not vote on. Synchronicity is a meaningful turn without the ego's signature, not a reward. Ram Dass arrived at the same dethroning from the other door. He called the manager the somebody, the one trained to take credit and stay late, and pointed at loving awareness as the one actually present for the day.
The somebody will try to hire the larger intelligence as an employee. That is the misunderstanding. The ego cannot use the Self. The one trying to become nobody is still a somebody with a new project. Jung's Self does not replace the ego. It includes it. Letters still have to be typed. What changes is the credit. Sign the letters. Stop signing them as the owner.
Who this is for
Watch this if you have been white-knuckling every hour as the sole adult of your own life, or if the best turns this year were ones you did not plan.
Questions this video answers
Who is actually living my life?
Not the one with the calendar. Jung called the larger center the Self, the organizing intelligence of the whole psyche. Ram Dass called the manager the somebody and pointed at loving awareness as the one actually present. The names differ. The relief does not.
What did Jung mean by the Self?
Not the self you introduce at a table. The ego is the center of what you can see. The Self is the whole beneath it: older, around it, with a will for this life the planner did not vote on. Dreams, slips, and the life that will not obey the plan are the Self getting a word in.
What did Ram Dass mean by the somebody?
The somebody is the one trained from childhood to run the building: to take credit, take blame, stay late. Loving awareness is not a mood. It is the one who is here while the somebody works. After India he said he was not the doer. Grace was living the life. The talks were a useful costume.
Does this mean I should drop my work and wait to be carried?
No. Jung's Self includes the ego. The secretary is still needed. Ram Dass never stopped answering the mail. He stopped believing the mail was the meaning of him. The day still wants your hands. It does not want your panic about being the sole adult.
