The World Happens In You, Not To You | Maya Explained
You are not a small self inside an enormous world. The world is the smaller thing.
The teaching
There is no outside. Not one thing you have ever experienced happened out there. Not the street. Not the weather. Not the opinion you have carried for eleven years. The world does not arrive from a distance and land on you. It appears in you.
Rupert Spira asks you to find, in actual experience, the moment you touched a world outside of awareness. You cannot. Nisargadatta hands you the evidence you meet every night: in deep sleep the world goes, and you are not harmed by its absence. Yogananda names the same location as a cosmic motion picture. What looks solid is light, vibrating. A projection, not a place you are standing inside.
Maya does not mean the world is fake. It means the measuring: the cut of one field into a here and a there. The world is real as appearance, false as a separate thing standing against you. You have spent your life defending yourself against a place that does not exist. Look for the edge. You will not find it.
Who this is for
Watch this if you have been bracing for a world that feels like it could arrive and undo you, or if maya has been explained as the idea that nothing is real.
Questions this video answers
What does maya actually mean?
Not that the world is fake. Maya comes from a root meaning to measure. It is the cutting of one seamless field into a here and a there, a me and a not-me. What is illusory is the cut, not the world.
How do I know the world appears in me?
Every item of evidence you have is a perception appearing in awareness. In deep sleep the world vanishes completely, and you are not harmed by its absence. Whatever can vanish nightly while you remain is appearing in you, not a place you stand inside.
Does this mean I am the only one here, or that nothing happened to me?
No. Awareness is not private property, and harm was still harm. The teaching is not detachment from the film. It is the end of believing you can be killed by it. The world is appearing where you already are.
What is the look-for-the-edge practice?
Take a sound or a sight and locate the exact point where it stops being out there and becomes your hearing or seeing of it. You will not find that line. The bracing loses its address. You can do this in a supermarket queue.
