You Cannot Force the River
What you are forcing may only need to be allowed.
The teaching
What you are forcing may only need to be allowed. Wu wei is not laziness. It is the intelligence that carves canyons: effortless action, non-forcing, the path of least resistance as skill rather than collapse.
Lao Tzu: doing nothing, leaving nothing undone. Zhuangzi: the playful intelligence of letting go. Florence Scovel Shinn: a divine intelligence already knows the way.
If you are exhausted from working harder at a life that will not open, this is the crossing. Be the river.
Who this is for
Watch this if striving has left you empty-handed, or if letting go has sounded like giving up.
Questions this video answers
What is wu wei?
The Daoist art of non-forcing action. Not passivity. Action that does not fight the current, and so leaves nothing undone.
Isn't letting go just quitting?
Not here. Forcing is the exhausted extra. Allowing is the river's intelligence. The life you want may only open when you stop shoving it.
How do Lao Tzu and Shinn meet in this video?
Lao Tzu and Zhuangzi name the current. Shinn names a wisdom that already knows the way. Together they ask you to release what you have been forcing.
