You Are the Archer | Buddha's Second Arrow

Feel the hurt, and do not fire the story that makes it hurt twice.

Watch on YouTube

The teaching

You are the archer. When the hit lands, feel the hurt, and do not fire the story that makes it hurt twice. The Buddha told it as two arrows. Life sends the first: the news, the no, the pain that lands in the body. The grief, the argument, and the why me are a second feeling, another arrow into the same place.

Pema Chödrön named the half-second before that story. The body tightens. She calls that charge shenpa, the hook. The story is what happens after you bite. The first arrow was life. The second one had your fingerprints on it. You have been calling it processing. It was the second arrow, and you were the archer.

The work is not to dodge the first arrow, and it is not to feel nothing. Stay with the first feeling. It is clean. It ends. Set the phone face-down. Do not type the speech. There is a third arrow that arrives dressed as progress: shooting yourself for having bitten. That sentence is not the practice. Feel the first. Set the second down. Do not punish the hand that reached.

Watch this if the hit is already over and you are still writing the speech you will never send.

Questions this video answers

What is the Buddha's second arrow?

Life sends the first: the news, the no, the pain that lands in the body. The second is the grief, the argument, and the why me. That feeling is not the wound. It is another arrow fired into the same place.

What does Pema Chödrön mean by the hook?

Shenpa is the bodily charge a half-second before the story. Feel the hook. Do not bite. The story is what happens after you bite.

Does this mean I should feel nothing?

No. The trained mind still feels the strike. Numbness is not the teaching. Stay with the first feeling. It ends. The sequel is the one you keep supplying.

What is the third arrow?

Noticing you bit the hook, then shooting yourself for biting. The sentence that you should already be over this is another point in the same wound. Mercy includes the one who missed.
